What is RE?
Religious Education is a school curriculum subject through which children explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live. Through gaining the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, children will be able to reflect on their own ideas and ways of living too.
What difference does learning in RE make?
Through positive and inspiring learning experiences in RE, children at Tintagel Primary will:
- Have opportunity to search for meaning, value and purpose in life.
- Have exposure to a range of activities which enable spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
- Know about different religious traditions and non-religious world-views.
- Understand the main beliefs and practices of these traditions in beliefs in local, national and global contexts.
- Understand how religious identity influences people's lives.
- Express views about the nature, value and significance of religion for people and the planet.
- Consider challenging questions of meaning, purpose, truth, values (including British Values) and commitments and the answers offered by religions and non-religious world views.
- Develop the skills of enquiry, analysis and evaluation skills and be able to articulate their own considered ideas in relation to these challenging questions.
- Make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts, practices and ideas studied so they can reflect on key concepts and questions studied.
- Combat prejudice.
- Inspire tolerance.
- Have rich learning experiences, meaningful trips and experience of sacred objects.
- The minimum allocation of 5% of the curriculum time for RE.
How do we teach RE?
RE teaching is based on the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus 2020 (SACRE) and in Class 1 RE learning is incorporated within the aspect of the EYFS curriculum, Understanding the World.
We develop children’s knowledge and understanding of some of the major world faiths by exploring the beliefs, values and traditions of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. RE is delivered in discrete lessons, which may involve cross curricular subjects like drama or storytelling, art or writing, but the RE knowledge and skill is explicitly taught. The curriculum overview is bound up both in the context of our school (closely aligned to our whole school values and linked whole school Enquiry questions) and the yearly calendar of festivals and celebrations linked to faith. We document our RE learning journey in class floor books.
